BLUE GRASSY KNOLL perform Buster Keaton’s ‘The General’ – seated show
Theatre Royal, Castlemaine (Castlemaine, VIC)
Friday, 20 February 2026 7:30 pm
Blue Grassy Knoll celebrate the 100th anniversary of Buster Keaton’s classic silent film The General, performing their orignial score.
Playing live in front of the movie screen, their filmscore, encompasses perfectly the epic and comedic nature of Keaton’s inspired masterpiece, and first premiered at Melbourne Film Festival in 2010.
The General, released in 1926, has been critically hailed as a comedic tour de force and is undoubtedly the best train film ever made. The Civil War adventure-epic was made toward the end of the silent era and is filled with hilarious sight gags and perfectly timed stunt work, all beautifully underscored by Blue Grassy Knoll’s creative sound world of music and effects. It is thrilling, vibrant entertainment.
Blue Grassy Knoll have a long and rich history of writing filmscores to the silent movies of Buster Keaton. Since forming in 1996 they have toured all 5 continents, played on Broadway, represented Australia at two World Expos, and featured in countless local and international festivals, not least of which was the Edinburgh Festival, where they received rave 5-star reviews two years running. In recent years they have been regular performers at Federation Square’s Sounds of Silents festival.
Their performances have inspired a cult-following around Australia and appeal to the broadest possible demographic – from kids to grandparents, and everyone in between. This is a show that entertains on every level.
If you think you know what a silent movie is, yet haven’t seen the Blue Grassy Knoll in action – think again… Go prepared for the total experience.” (***** five stars) - Colin Denarti, The Guardian
“This splendid entertainment is a breathing, shared creative triumph. ***** (five stars)”
