Persepolis (2007)
In memory of Marjane Satrapi, who passed away this June at the age of 56, we present a screening of Persepolis (2007), a animated adaptation of her series of autobiographical graphic novels. Co-winner of the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival, Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud’s beloved film offers a darkly humorous reflection on the author’s experiences as a spirited young Iranian woman coming of age through the rule of the Shah, the Islamic Revolution, the gruelling Iran–Iraq War, and eventual move away from her homeland.
With a superb voice cast and vibrant black-and-white animation, Persepolis is a uniquely cinematic experience of a young girl's childhood in Tehran, moving through adolescence in Vienna to young adulthood in Paris. In 2025 Satrapi, well known for her activism, refused the Legion of Honour, France's highest and most prestigious award, citing French hypocrisy toward Iranian people. Her books, film, and art speaks for itself.
